Everything Home Security: Package Thieves

Posted by , , at 4:00 pm

As an online shopaholic (curse you one-click checkout!), I get really excited knowing there’s a package just waiting on my doorstep. I can only imagine how distraught I’d be if I came home to find that my package was stolen.

Unfortunately, thousands of people across the country have experienced this. “Package thieves” are plucking freshly delivered packages right from doorsteps. Some of these crooks are even following the delivery trucks! And the rate at which these goods get stolen spikes during the holidays.

The good news is that many of these package thieves have been caught and arrested – like this woman and this guy. And the common theme in these and other package thief arrest stories is the presence of security cameras.

Security Camera Protection

A security camera is a great way to watch over your delivered packages, and is even more effective when part of a home alarm system. Frontpoint customers can set up their camera to be automatically activated when it detects movement, so when the delivery guy drops off your package, you’ll know. You could then ask a neighbor or friend to pick up the package and keep it safe until you can retrieve it.

If worst comes to worst, your camera will also be activated should a package thief swoop by. That footage can be used to help the police capture the culprit.

It’s unfortunate that thieves have made it almost necessary to protect your deliveries, but at least it’s easy with a security camera. You can watch over your home, even when you’re not there.

I’ve been concerned about this issue. Luckily it’s never happened to me–yet. I’ve been thinking of putting a storage box or bench of some sort on my porch and attaching a door or window sensor on the lid. That way I could set up an alert to notify me when the bin is opened and packages are delivered. I can’t get deliveries at work but I don’t work far from home so can move them inside quickly if I need be. I also feel this might be a more accurate delivery notification and sometimes I get texts from Amazon way later than delivery. It’s not infallible but it might add a little piece of mind. What say ye, FrontPoint? Would this work? Thanks!

I really like this idea, AJ!

Of course, you have to make sure the bin is secured so no one could snatch that up too, but if you’re in a position to move them inside quickly, it sounds like it could work. Have to keep in mind though that many of these package thieves steal the goods within a hour of delivery.

But like you said, it’s not the perfect solution, but that one sensor notification letting you know that your package has been delivered could add to your piece of mind.

I prefer to have my mail-ordered items delivered to my office.

Camera’s can hinder, but not a promise to keep or get back your packages. I recommend getting a mail box at UPS, FedEx, USPS and what ever. You only need to get the smallest mail box, and still get larger boxes. I don’t recommend USPS due to they do not accept FedEx or UPS deliveries. It is safer than a front porch even with a camera.

I unfortunately had this happen to me in November and I lost $200 worth of items from two packages that were snagged from my porch. it’s like a kick in the stomach when it happened I was just second and what a hassle it was. I had to make a police report I had to call both companies that the items were stolen from and I had to fill out paperwork from them I had a fax it or send it back in the mail to get my account adjusted to get my funds refunded to me. I would like information on putting the camera on the outside of my home on my porch. please contact me as you have my number because I am a customer with your system.

Hi Debi, I’m sorry you had to go through that. It’s definitely a terrible feeling when you realize your packages have been stolen. And you’re right, it’s such a hassle!

It seems like you’ve reached out to us already to talk about cameras, so a Support Specialist should be contacting you soon. But just to make sure, I’ll let someone know directly.
