We already shared a few tips on how to protect your belongings while you travel, but what about your belongings back home?
When traveling, it usually means you’ll be leaving your house empty and exposed. Obviously, this isn’t an ideal situation, and with burglars often looking for signs of an empty home, it can also be dangerous. But there are a few simple steps you can take before you leave on your trip to improve your home’s safety, so when you return, your home will be just as you left it.
Lock all windows and doors before you leave
The most basic way of securing your home is also the easiest to forget. Before you leave for your trip, check and double-check that all entry points – front door, back door, basement door, patio door, windows, etc. – are secured.
Avoid announcing your travel plans on social media
Nowadays, burglars are using social media as a tool to pick and choose their targets. Announcing that you’re going to be leaving for a trip, posting pictures while on vacation, or tweeting real-time updates of your activity is essentially the same as announcing your home is open for the taking. It’s especially important to let your kids know about this tip!
Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to take care of your home
For the duration of your trip, ask someone you trust to housesit or stop by to make it appear like your home is occupied. This can be done by picking up mail and packages, or turning on the lights – all things a burglar notices while canvassing a home.
Light up your home
Turning on your lights is a great, effective way to deter a burglar. If there’s someone who can take care of your home, ask them to leave a few lights on every night. It’s also easy to do yourself, even if you’re not home, with devices that are automated or remotely controlled.
Arm your security system
If you own a home security system, remember to arm it! And don’t forget, if you have Interactive Monitoring, you’ll receive notifications when there’s an alert, allowing you act instantly. You can also access your system remotely at any time, from anywhere.
