Monitoring Your Home with Cameras

If you’re with Frontpoint, you have peace of mind knowing that your home is being professionally monitored 24/7. But as comforting as it is to know that someone is protecting your house around the clock, it’s also nice being able to do a little bit of monitoring yourself.

One of the most effective methods of home surveillance is using a security camera (or multiple). With cameras, you can check in on your home real-time using your computer or mobile device, allowing you to see what’s happening with your own eyes. This is a great way to confirm alerts, and check in on kids, pets and guests.

Live or Recorded

There are two ways to view security camera footage. First, you can view a live feed using various devices. If you’re at work, log into and tune in on your computer. At a restaurant or just walking around? Pull out your phone and you can see what’s going on in your home using the Frontpoint mobile app.

You can also set your cameras up to record clips whenever they’re activated by motion. You’ll get a notification whenever a clip is recorded and you can view it right that instant, or at a later time. Up to 1000 clips can be stored at a time, so don’t worry about watching it right away!

Using cameras in conjunction with your sensors forms a powerful combination. Once an alert notifies you that a sensor has been triggered, just view the live feed or recorded clip on your camera to confirm if it’s a real emergency or not.

Refreshed Cameras

If you don’t already own a security camera, a great one to start off with is the Wireless Indoor Camera. With up to a 1280×800 resolution, viewing range of up to 20 feet, and night vision capability, it serves all your indoor surveillance needs.

And we’ve also recently updated a few aspects about Wireless Indoor Camera – primarily regarding the setup process. Admittedly, while setting up our system and sensors is a piece of cake, setting up our cameras was often a different story. Obviously, that had to change.

    I spoke to a front point on the phone and I was told that you have outdoor cameras that can be hardwired to my monitor in case Wi-Fi goes down. they will still be Wi-Fi so I can watch real time from my phone but will have a coax backup. is that incorrect?

      Matt, our wireless outdoor cameras work solely off of WiFi connection. We apologize if there was any miscommunication and ask that you please let us know if you have any questions going forward.

    This article is worth a read. I was also in search of a CCTV camera ( ) for my home outdoors. The camera actually helped me know who is at the door easily without having to take the stairs every time, since I am staying upstairs. Even when I am working from home or attending a skype meeting this actually helped me drop unwanted visitors.

    Future FrontPoint Camera-Customers,

    If you are using an Apple Airport Express Router, I recommend considering other camera solutions. The FrontPoint Camera’s don’t properly sync with the Apple’s Airport out-of-the box, and FrontPoint’s customer service team appears to be lacking in the the will, or more likely technical ability, to work through anything but the most basic technical issues. (i.e. power off/power on/hard reset). The video customer service reps are very polite and patient, but you’re not going to get anything but the most-basic assistance.

    Hi, what are the frames per second on the live stream for cameras? I’d like to be able to use it not only for security surveillance but also training, process design & understanding.

      Julian, you can adjust the frame rate for those wireless cameras up to 5 frames per second. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Too bad the new Image Sensor your company has is only compatible with the touch screen panel even though all your other past equipment is compatible with the new touch screen. Was this done as a sales incentive for new customers? Or do new customers have the option to either get the new touchscreen panel or the previous panel?

      Hi Neil! We still offer the SimonXT Control Panel to all new customers. However, the Image Sensor won’t work with the SimonXT due to software/hardware incompatibilities.

    I am searching for a system to monitor the outdoor of my house. I need to see who is there outside and to get notifications on my phone. Searching online I stumbled upon these two: wireless home security systems- ( ) CCTV security cameras- ( ). I need your suggestion to select the one which will be more secured.

      Eunice, since we use different equipment with our system, we really cannot speak to the technology and encryption of the cameras offered by the company you mention.     Will the cameras continue to record even if my internet goes down? The internet in my area tends to be pretty spotty.

      Hi Philip, unfortunately not, the cameras will not be able to record or transmit any data if your Internet goes down.

      This is the very big question Philip, what will happen if internet goes down. Before buying any device makes sure this question must be answer. Fortunately, it will not record when internet goes down? What is the alternative things to do to secure your home with out internet?

        Hi Andrew, it’s important to understand that with the Frontpoint system, when the Internet goes down, only your cameras will have their functions interrupted. The rest of the Frontpoint system – Control Panel, sensors, Interactive features, etc. – will continue to operate as normal. These functions do not rely on the Internet. Hope this clears things up!

    Does the camera require Internet service or can it work with the cellular system?

      Hi Mike, our systems have a cellular connection, but the cameras do require an Internet connection, primarily to transmit all the data (videos and recordings).

    Do the outdoor cameras transmit via WiFi or do they have to be (ethernet) hard-wired back to the ISP’s modem? If WiFi it seems that the signal could be “spotty” depending on the location and proximity to the WAP. Yes/No? Thank you.

      Hey Tom, the Outdoor Cameras will connect via Wi-Fi. And we’re pretty confident that you’ll have a strong signal! But yes, like any other Wi-Fi connected device, lots of factors can determine how strong the signal is: distance from router, interference, etc. We’ll be happy to work with you to find the right configuration, if you need any assistance.

      Our cameras work with both the Simon XT Control Panel and Touch-Screen Control Panel, Fidel! The Wireless Indoor Camera is $129, but keep in mind that you will need Ultimate Monitoring in order to use it.

    I was thinking of adding two interior cameras aimed out through windows. One would monitor the front door area and the other the patio area in the back where there are sliding glass doors. Would the image quality and motion sensitivity be good enough in this type of arrangement? The cameras may be at an angle to the glass. What is the maximum angle and still have quality performance?

      Hi William, excellent questions. It may require some tinkering to get the settings right, but the image quality and motion sensitivity should be just fine if you were to set your cameras up this way. Just be mindful of how things like sun glare, cars driving by, swaying trees, etc. could all affect your recordings!

      For outdoor use, I definitely recommend the Outdoor Camera as opposed to the Indoor, but that’s definitely up to your preference.



        Have a new system with an indoor wireless. You say you recommend outdoor as well. I was interested in that but the rep told me they can obviously be tinkered with (I.E having a rock thrown at them, etc). I would like to have the back of our house monitored as much as possible. The back door backs up to a wooded hillside and we have had a break in thru that door in 2005. No neighbors can see it. We have our indoor camera monitoring that door. Wondering if an outside camera is worth it considering cost and ability to be tampered with.

          Lesley, this is something that we really can’t answer one way or another as there are various answers here. Some people find outdoor cameras to be very useful while others think they are at too much of a risk. It completely depends on your situation, however, if you ordered a product from us and you can tell in a matter of days it’s not what you wanted, we definitely work with our customers to ensure a smooth return process.     What happened to the pan and tilt camera that was previously available? Is something new coming to replace it? (I noticed the previous one didn’t have night vision)

      You got a good eye, Matt! Since we’ve decided to rework how we do cameras, we’re taking a step back from the Pan/Tilt Camera. Current users with the Pan/Tilt will continue to receive our full support, but it is no longer available for purchase. We’re currently testing out a number of cameras that we’re interested in implementing soon, so stay tuned!
