It’s been quite a year for the US home security industry: plenty of breaking news and hot trends to track and report on. So, as we approach the new year, here’s a brief overview of the 2011 topics that made the cut for the top eleven in 2011.       This year saw two significant recalls: one by ADT of roughly 20,000 carbon monoxide detectors where atechnician wiring error was the culprit, and another by alarm equipment maker 2GIG of about 30,000 alarm control units with potentially faulty signaling technology.       ADT settled a wrongful death suit where a mom and her boyfriend were murdered after she bought an expensive ADT system – and the equipment did not provide the specified level of protection. After fighting very hard to keep this from going to trial, ADT settled the suit three days before trial commenced, supposedly for millions.

 

    1. Door to Door Alarm Sales Reached a New Low.
      Warnings on “door knocker” alarm companies are all over the internet: the Better Business Bureau, local police departments, and even the Federal Trade Commission have advised consumers to think twice about opening your door for that aggressive pitch.     1. Burglars Use Facebook, Too!
      Facebook cuts both ways: while it’s true that police are catching criminals by posting pictures of burglary suspects on Facebook, it’s also a fact that posting your travel or even weekend plans on-line is as bad idea. More burglars are using social media to track your whereabouts, so be very careful what you post. Same goes for your kids.

    1. Cable and Telephone Companies are Offering Alarm Services.

Of course, it’s not all good news for companies: the number of complaint sites (and complaints) has also risen, showing that people are more determined than ever to get their money’s worth.
